Love Came Down

But when the fullness of time came,
God sent forth His Son, born of a woman…
Galatians 4:4

I share my home with two vastly different cats.  George (a female) is a lap cat, and as needy an animal as I have ever seen.  If you sit down for two seconds in this house, George will be up and trying to settle into your lap.  She never gets enough attention, and “punishes” me in unsavory ways when I don’t give her what she wants.  I am not a cat psychologist by any means, so have no clue exactly what sets her off, other than the fact that I do have a life and cannot spend my day COL [cat on lap].

Sapphire, on the other hand, wants her affection in small morning doses.  While I am tapping away at my computer in the study, she is pawing on my bedroom door, crying.  She knows perfectly well that I am not in there, but she chooses this irritating habit to get my attention (it works, doesn’t it?).  I call her name and she comes straight to my chair.  Standing on her hind legs, she gently taps me on the leg with one paw.  She waits patiently until I pick her up, fold her into a ball on my chest with her head tucked under my chin, and begin rubbing the side of her face and around her ear.  She purrs like a snoring drunk, flexing and re-flexing one front paw that is always sticking out in the air.  When she has had her fill, she breaks the embrace and I set her down on the floor.

God has proclaimed His love for the human race from the very dawning of time through priest, prophet, creation, and the written word, but we have had a relatively difficult time receiving those messages.  How can one love what one cannot see, touch or feel?  Finally, God sent forth His Son as a tiny baby, born on a starlit night in a cave outside Bethlehem.  Love came down to the human race, wrapped in swaddling clothes and cradled in a manger.
