Expect the Unexpected

There is … a time for every purpose under heaven.
Ecclesiastes 3:1

Every human being has a day when nothing goes as expected – when the normal and routine turns topsy-turvy and we have to scramble to keep up.  Today was just such a day for me.  Normally, I write this blog around 7:30-9:00 am in the morning; at this moment, I am sitting in front of my computer for the first time today, and it is almost 7:00 pm!

Back in November, I signed a contract with a contractor friend of mine to have my main bath renovated – a project that is necessary for many reasons.  The three-man demolition team arrived and began to pull out the tub, vanity, toilet, etc., and pull down the ceramic tile/dry wall from the walls.  A pause in noise, then “Um, Sherrie?” alerted me to a possible problem.  When the drywall was removed from behind the toilet, it was discovered that there was extensive black mold on the drywall of the adjacent half bath in my bedroom.  Tearing it out (obviously a necessity) meant renovating that bath as well – a project I had anticipated for the future but not budgeted for now.  Leaving it “as is” is not an option, however, so the whole kit and caboodle has to go.  Suddenly I am back at Lowes and Home Depot, searching for the additional items needed for that tiny room.

My plans for the day vanished right along with all the toilets in my house.  Fortunately, I have several friends living near-by that will allow me potty privileges, but it is going to be a very interesting couple of weeks until everything gets back to normal.  Which begs the question, what exactly is “normal?”

The longer I live, the more I am convinced that “normal” is whatever life decides to throw at me that day, along with the ups and downs of my frustration level vs. faith level.  The Creator of the universe is nothing if not a master of ingenuity, and I have complete trust that He is going to guide me through the inconvenience and laughter of the next week(s).  He is able, and together we will smile our way through it.
