Remembering in Arizona

A man will give all he has for his own life.
Job 2:4

Today marks the first anniversary of the tragic Tuesday when a mentally ill 22-year-old man opened fire on a crowd in front of a Safeway – a community gathering for a meet-and-greet with their congresswoman in my home state of Arizona.  Six people were killed, including a federal judge and a young girl born on 9-11-2001.  Thirteen others were wounded, including Congresswoman Giffords, who was shot in the head and not expected to survive.  The human desire to live is overwhelming, however, and against all odds, Gabrielle Giffords has fought with courage and unbelievable determination to regain her life.  She is now able to walk and talk, vote in Congress, and attend some of the memorial events slated for this anniversary.

The human spirit longs for life and freedom – to be able to love and be loved, to give to the good of others, to leave behind a footstep in the sands of time.  Gabrielle Giffords has done this and much more.  I salute her today, and pray that her recovery continues to astound the medical community and the world.
