A Little Child

And He said: I tell you the truth,
Unless you change and become like little children,
You will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 18:3

In small batches, young kids are a real joy to teach.  Their sense of wide-eyed wonder has not been jaded by time and experience.  Sunday was my day to teach music to the K-5th grade Sunday School children, and it was a real delight.  We were talking about the “breakfast on the beach” given by Christ for the disciples after His resurrection.

I have this darling little Kindergarten boy that we will call Eric.  He and his slightly older brother in combo can be both a delight and a real challenge, but Eric is the epitome of the wide-eyed, open-hearted child that soaks in information like a sponge.  He was sitting right in front of me – his little face staring earnestly at mine, trying to take in every detail.

At the close of the lesson, we were learning, I’m Gonna Sing When the Spirit Says Sing as our last song.  Because children love to sing and do actions, our verses were:
I’m Gonna Sing…
I’m Gonna Clap…
I’m Gonna Dance…
I’m Gonna SHOUT…
I’m Gonna Pray…

After making sure that we had words and actions clearly in mind, we stepped next door to sing for the older women’s Bible Study class.  Eric was on the front row – his little round face flushed with excitement.  When the children began to sing, I could hardly take my eyes off him – huge grin, sparkling eyes, and in-your-face singing that pronounced, “Listen to me!  Watch Me!  Believe what I am singing!”

…and a little child shall lead them.
Isaiah 11:6
