Isaiah: Prince of Peace

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.  Isaiah 9:6 [KJV]

The fulfillment of this prophetic naming of the Christ Child began immediately after the moment of birth.  Brilliant angels appeared in the ebony night sky, bursting forth in a joyful proclamation:  Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.”  Luke 2:14 [KJV]

What does peace mean to you?  For our country, peace would be freedom from war – to be at peace.  For your community, peace might be freedom from disturbance – law and order.  For you, peace might mean serenity, calm, quiet – the absence of mental conflict.  For Alan, Ben and Tom, peace might be placing their medical needs in the hands of the great Physician.  For me, peace is the absence of fear.  At one time in my life, I lived with  fear on a daily basis.  When my circumstances finally changed, I experienced peace for the first time in many years.

Jesus reiterated the angels’ message throughout His ministry on earth.  In the gospel of John, He says, “I’ve told you all this so that trusting Me, you will be unshakable and assured, deeply at peace.  In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties. But take heart! I’ve conquered the world.”  [John 16:33 Message]   As Jesus’ work on earth began its unwavering path toward the cross, He promised, “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you…Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.” [John 14:27 NAS]

O come, Desire of nations, bind
all people in one heart and mind.
Bid envy, strife and quarrels cease,
Fill the whole world with heaven’s peace.
Rejoice!  Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
